My First Fashion Show
My partner, Ashlee, and I had the incredible opportunity to work on two pieces for our sophomore spotlight in the Belmont fashion show. The project involved collaborating with CreatiVets, a non-profit organization that provides art as therapy for war veterans struggling with PTSD. We worked closely with a veteran named Gino Soto, who shared his deeply personal story and artwork with us. His painting, created with red paint and the words "I love my life," was inspired by a heart-wrenching memory of his friend who was shot. As his friend lay dying, he said, "I love my life. I don't want to die." Hearing Gino’s story was truly moving and gave so much meaning to our work.
For our designs, Ashlee and I wanted every element to represent a piece of Gino’s story. We chose black lace to symbolize death, white leather as a nod to the canvas, and red paint to recreate the powerful emotions from his painting. Each detail was intentional, and creating these garments was a way to honor Gino’s experience and the strength he carries. Seeing these designs come to life on the runway was an unforgettable moment.
This project was one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve ever had. It reminded me of the power fashion can have in telling stories and creating connections. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to contribute to more shows in the coming years at Belmont.
